It's important to know the different types of rug materials because it can determine the look, durability, and care of the rug.

Rugs come in many different fibers, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Whether you're thinking about durability, care, or just the overall look, it pays to acquaint yourself with all the different types of rugs and how they can enhance a room.

Natural Fiber Rugs

Natural fibers are comprised of materials that grow in nature that are harvested and processed into fibers. These rugs provide softness, warmth, and durability for any room. There are many natural materials but "Wool" is by far the most commonly used in RUG. Wool the most beautiful, luxurious, and durable of all the rug fibers, wool is a natural fiber highly regarded for its strength, durability, crush resistance, cleanability and comfort.

Wool Rugs

Wool is the most common material used for rugs. When handwoven or hand-tufted, they're particularly soft and plush. They can also be hand-loomed, hand-knotted, and machine-loomed. The latter is usually fused with synthetic fibers, Which can help extend the lifespan with adequate care.

Jute is made of a natural fiber that is fairly firm, although it is common to see it loomed with cotton now. They require careful cleaning for long-term sustainability. You can use a standard vacuum over them on the low setting, to avoid breaking the fibers.

Synthetic Fiber Rugs

Synthetic fiber rugs are made from materials such as polypropylene, bamboo silk, polyester, art silk, acrylic, micro fiber, micropolyester, viscose, and other synthetic materials. These rugs provide durability and softness at an affordable price point. Synthetic fibers are generally much more stain-resistant than natural fibers. They are generally also easier to maintain.

Polyester or polypropylene? These are two of the most popular types of synthetic fiber rugs, with good reason. While they’re extremely similar, they still have a few important differences that make them better suited for certain lifestyles.
